The summer of 1989 marked the inauguration of the Beaches Jazz Festival. This venture was received with enthusiasm from within the Beach community, private businesses and the staff of Lido's in the Beach. More than 10,000 people hung out on the lawns of Kew Gardens. The Beaches Jazz Festival, through the sale of T-shirts, managed to put $10,000 into coffers of Senior Link, to help enrich the lives of people who would have remembered Kew Gardens from years ago. Many of the original beachers came out to their old stompin' ground, for this first-ever, Beaches Jazz Festival. The 1st Annual Beaches Jazz Festival was also the first opportunity to have a wide variety of musicians getting together in one place at one time to showcase a true "people's festival".
