KAL DAVID AND THE REAL DEAL
2007 MainStage KEW Gardens

Kal David and The Real Deal
“..many of you know me for my long tradition of hiring the best blues guitarists in the business and I'm happy to count Kal David as one of the best...What a talent!”

- John Mayall

Born and raised in Chicago; Kal David has been at it a long time. In the course of a career that's spanned more than three decades, David has distinguished himself at every turn and continues to evolve musically.

It all started in earnest for David in Chicago in the late 60's when he teamed up with fellow guitarist Paul Cotton to form Illinois Speed Press and release two guitar driven, critically acclaimed albums. ISP bounced between Cotton's singer / songwriter sensibilities and David's roots grounded Blues Rock tendencies.

When ISP disbanded, Kal David's next move proved to be his rite of passage as a guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist. Joining forces with former Dylan bassist Harvey Brooks, and multi instrumentalist and soon-to- be-revered songwriter Marty Grebb, David’s new band, The Fabulous Rhinestones, was by all counts – to use the term du jour – a “super group”.

The band rubbed elbows and gigged with some of the musicians that, like The Rhinestones, took up residence in Woodstock New York, (and stood at the forefront of the music scene): Bob Dylan, The Band, Paul Butterfield, and Bonnie Raitt. Similar to The Band’s Big Pink, The Rhinestones used a home studio to produce two excellent albums that featured Grebb and David trading tunes and vocals, with David’s Blues and R&B inclinations now fully realized. The first release, The Fabulous Rhinestones, featuring a number of songs in heavy FM rotation, stands the test of time. The album is a collection of memorable melodies, thoughtful songwriting, and matchless musicianship steered by David's dazzling guitar work.

Although The Rhinestones were primarily a regional success, the word was out about Kal David. The experience led him to a more pronounced commitment to Blues, and a number of prestigious positions including occupying the lead guitar chair in both Etta James' band and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. A later move to California in the 80's proved to be another musical plateau. With partner and vocalist Lauri Bono, David opened The Blue Guitar, a prominent Blues and Jazz venue that they ran successfully for close to a decade and served as the site of numerous remarkable live performances in addition to three outstanding live recordings.

Today Kal David uses his musical proficiency to not only captivate audiences worldwide but also to give back to the community. He helps aspiring musicians by giving lectures and raising funds to put instruments back in the schools. Kal David explains, “Music defines our lives and lights the fire of passion”. Discover that passion when Kal David and the Real Deal storm the Main Stage at The 2007 Beaches International Jazz Festival!
